Project 1
The Troublemakers Manifesto: A Design Colloquium, is the title of an academic conference for which we are required to develop a title cum key artwork and collateral. Like all conference promotional material, there is a need to develop a key-artwork or signature artwork that will be used across the different collateral.
The Troublemakers Manifesto: A Design Colloquium
The conference seeks to provoke inner dialogue of one's beliefs and to create a new paradigm shift through alternative viewpoints. Troublemakers often make others feel uncomfortable. They challenge the norm, they question establishments rules and the status quo. This tension is needed to break the monotony brought about by societal conformity to the diktats of those wielding influence. To most people, troublemakers are not a welcome lot but without their disruptive tendencies - creating ripples and ruffling feathers - unspoken ideas will not be made known, and innovations will not come to pass. Why do they do, what they do? What principles and values lie beneath their decisions and actions? Are you a troublemaker, if so what is your manifesto?
Idea vs Concept
Often, these terms are used by students and lecturers interchangeably and incorrectly. I would like to clarify its use in this post, in so that moving forward, all of you would be more cognisant when using it.
The following explanation is in the context of our (creative people) use:
An idea is singular in nature. You can have many ideas, but, for them to be considered as ideas, each one must be unique. Hence their singular nature.
A concept is plural. There can be many concepts: of the same type or different. They are generally derived from a singular thought. This thought is represented in the form of an idea.
Meaning: Concepts are derived from a single idea. So every idea you have should ideally lead to a slew of concepts (Idea first, and then concepts based on that idea follows). Each individual idea (tree) produces its own concepts (branches). The better the idea, the more the concepts. I often say say, “a good idea, has legs”.
So henceforth, when you use the terms idea/concept, be cognisant of their meaning before using it in your description or explanation.

Title and Key Artwork
Week 6 - Week X
To start, we were told to have our digitise our key artwork roughly first. The key artwork should be relevant and preferably a metaphor of the title itself. And it also has to relate to design, be it social design, environmental design and etc.

Week 7
This time i gave it some thought and decided to change my key artwork entirely. The idea of troublemakers in terms of behaviour. As designers living in a capitalistic society, having to stand out is getting harder and harder. And for this to happen our job is to challenge ideas and even question our own believe sometimes. That doesn't make us a troublemaker per se but to a certain degree every designer is a trouble maker. The horse mask represents the idea of ridicule and sarcasm, not to mention the sense of anonymity that comes with it. I then decided to pair it up with a more serious looking attire to of the body to further illustrate the idea of the ironism. It is to represent the tom, dick and harry's sitting down in their office desk, apart of the capitalist rat race.

After that id bring it to Photoshop and mask out the backgrounds and give them some colour treatment.

I then bring them both to Illustrator and try to fit the two together. And start trying out my type, "Troublemakers Manifesto: A Design Colloquium", i also added a halftone filter over the final key artwork.

Feedback
Week 6
General Feedbacks :
The meaning of manifesto is a published declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer. We are not allowed to use lightbulb in our design as it is too common and boring. Mr. Vinod explained on how we can generate ideas, by mind mapping. He told us that we would generate more ideas as most of our ideas are lazy ideas.
Specific feedback :
You have to find an idea behind it, the marcel duchamp artwork doesn't do anything justice. It has to be design related, not fine-arts.

Week 7
Specific Feedback:
After last weeks feedback, i decided to change to a picture of a horse mask. i explained a few reasons why i picked it and their major concern was first that if it was from a movie, as it could be counted as copyright infringement.
Another concern after explaining the idea behind the concept was that its too wordy, your key-artwork should be able to have to say it on its own. Also besides having a keyartwork that resembles the word trouble maker, they also have to be fighting for something, having a horse mask what are you fighting for? he asks.
General feedback:
He told us to check out Shigeo Fukada.
Specific Feedback:
After showing him the changes ive made and my posters he's persuaded with my addition of the body to the horse its just he said how i have to find a way to overcome the limitations of the text, as the key artwork has to stay constant wherever it goes. Also to change the body, the polo shirt does'nt seem to really relay my representation of office worker.
Also he commented on my slow progress with my blog and its not good.
General feedback:
The concept is meshed with the model in a graphic design artwork. It's not that simple but it's important. Note that categories exist within ideas and the level of the idea's potency varies from different fields. Further reading is necessary. You need to have all the alerts and changes in your E portfolio.
Reflection
Week 6
It felt nice being back.
Week 7It was a replacement class and i wished it was at 10 instead. It was quite hard for me to get my brain warmed up at 8
