Week 12

I discussed on my idea of rebranding Giant. I never like the giant logo and thought this is a chance to to solve that problem. We discussed on creating a logo type for giant and typeface for the descriptive to come with the giant products.

Final Project

Week 11_Logo Type Development

Upon starting this assignment I took Mr.Vinods advice and did more research on the current Giant branding. The idea of rebranding is to give a company a new look and feel. We could either take it as far as 360 degrees or give it a new look while retaining its main aspects like the shape, colour etc.

It is understood that giant is suppose to be a low-cost brand, for the people. So my plan is to give it a more modern, westernised look so its at par with other upper-class grocery brands.  Namely,  BIG, Jaya Grocers, Carrefour, Village Grocer and Tesco even.

Fig1.1Giant Logo

The giant logo, consists of three main colours green, yellow and red. It has a cursive type font, with an oval shape to overall give the logo an encasing. Before moving on i did more research on the other brands mentioned above.

After going through more on google I realised there was an equal amount of San Serif and Serif logo types when it came to this industry. As they both could come of clear and bold which is what we want, so that wasn't an issue. From there i started typing out the word "GIANT" Fig 1.3 in different typefaces that i regularly use, in uppercase and lowercase to get the ball rolling.

Fig 1.3 Screenshot Type Exploration
From Top to Bottom, Arial, Cooper Standard, Futura, Garamond Pro, Poppins, Times New Roman, Andela Mono. After looking back back at the original logo i think id like to have this rebranding to be modern, chic and boxy something opposite of the current cursive font.

I had two concepts in mind, the first to have a super abstract stylistic concept of how i would want giant to look like in my world kind of logotype. And the second, a more acceptable, more applicable to current times kind of logo type.  And being the late one in the class i wasted no time and started digitising my first idea.

Fig 1.4 Shapes used through out the typeface
With the idea of wanting it to be the total opposite and also trying to factor in the definition of GIANT i was inspired by the oval shape that encases the current logo. Using a box as the base, i then used different variations of circular shapes in Fig 1.4 to create the bowl, stem, shoulder etc. of the letters.

Fig 1.7 First round of the completed collection of upper case alphabets.
Due to the flashy and extravagant nature of this font, it is definitely only applicable as a logo type. And definitely would need a second font to accompany it, for now I just used 'Poppins' as the font for SUPER MARKET in Fig 1.7.

I then went onto digitising my second idea. The more simple, more acceptable font. This time i was imagining if Giant were to be a small market somewhere in Europe. I wanted it to look nostalgic, i wanted to make it feel like the one of those store fronts maybe in Italy or France.

I wanted to give the store a friendlier, family environment, and i think the rounded edges gave the perfect impression. Still keeping it big and bold i think the rounded edges does bring back that nostalgic feeling at the same. Throughout creating the font, I made sure to use the same circle over and over to maintain the consistency of the rounded edges as seen in Fig 1.9.

After consulting with Mr.Vinod and Mr.Shamsul they've agreed that the first idea is a go. And now is to see it applied.

Final Construction :

Application:

Giant is a grocery store, so i decided to try and apply the logo on to the usual items of a super market like the coupons, billboards, paper bags and general signage.

Feedback

Week 12
After telling them of my idea, rebranding GIANT. they suggest i do research on the company first. Besides just rebranding the logo, he suggested i do a whole type face that is similar to the logo type, that could work as a "discriptive" typeface that can accompany the logo on products maybe.

As a general feedback, everyone should be done with their collaterals and all their printings framed up.

Reflection

Experience

Week 11
Everybody was already on to the next project while i was still amending my blog on the last project.
Week 12
Im actually really really late on to my final project. And im kinda nervous i might not get it in time.

Week 13
I was absent on this day

Observations

Week 11
Im actually really really late on to my final project. And im kinda nervous i might not get it in time.

Week 12
Were two weeks away from our last week of class so everyone was really busy at work with their final project.

Week 13
i was absent

Findings

Week 11
For the last project we had to print out merchandise and i realised that getting all the collaterals to match in-terms the shade of colour is not easy. What you see on screen is not necessarily what you get.

Week 12
Not much finding this week

Week 13
i was absent
