Lecture Notes

Lecture 1_ Introduction to module

Week 1

Information is key, aesthetics is secondary. Why are data visualised as such? Go back to design principles to help the visualisation. FLIP presentations is about returning the learning with a 8 minute presentation. Condense the knowledge in 3-4 slides.

Lecture 2_ L.A.T.C.H

Week 2

Today we learned about Location, Alphabet, Time, Category and Hierarchy within an infographic. Some principles are inter implemented to help further simplify the communication of the information and data.

Mr Kannan:

The ideation process has a practical sequence to it. References (create moodboards to guide your design and provide write ups to the images) > Sketching (as thumbnails and not fine art, time is a factor) > Transfer the sketches into more detailed versions (while adding or subtracting elements) > Finalised artwork. Accept criticism along the way and be humble.

Lecture 3_ Chunking

Week 3

Chunking is a term referring to the process of taking individual pieces of information (chunks) and grouping them into larger units. It is a concept originates from the field of cognitive psychology. By grouping each piece into a large whole, you can improve the amount of information you can remember.

UX professionals can break their text and multimedia content into smaller chunks to help users process, understand, and remember it better.

In our group, present an explanation on the topic and provide an example of how to best utilise this technique in terms of visual delivery for each of these approach:

1- Good old vanilla infographic
2- UX/UI, web, app, games (screen based basically!)
3- Processes (refer to Project 1 brief)

Exercise

Week 1_ Quantify & Visualise Data (10%)

Our first exercise allowed us to pick between using LEGO bricks or button to Quantify raw data and visualise information as a photograph. I picked blue LEGO bricks. The images below shows my progress with the bricks till my final submission.

Week 2_ L.A.T.C.H (10%)

Give narrative to your infographics. Pick a generation of Pokemon, the destination and squeeze in 4 Pokemon characters (including their evolutions).
I choose the Pokemon monsters from Generation I from the Region of ALOLA
Location: The 4 different islands - each is represented by a Pokemon that could only be found there.
Alphabet:  Islands are introduced in an alphabetical manner.
       Time:  Pokemon's evolution.
 Category:  Pokemon's type of category.
Hierarchy:  Pokemon's evolution.
