Reflection

Experience

To reflecting back on the semester, it's been a wild ride. This module has definitely been a roller coaster ride. There were many ups and downs. First, because it was not always easy to get the outcome we want for a certain exercise/project straight away. Sometimes, it was because it was hard to come out with ideas because of stress. Besides that, throughout the week, there were a lot of criticism but I know that it was all to bring out the best in me. To understand how Typography works. I learned a lot and even got to learn how to make gifs, animation and how to express words just by using typefaces in this module which was fun because I never knew how it worked. This module has definitely taught me that there will be a lot of barriers coming my way whether in my degree years or in my working life. All in all, this module was stressful but a learning progress which made it fun in certain ways.
Observation

Being in Typography class, I realised I get to see many different creative minds. Everyone has a different and unique style that they go for. It gives me inspiration and sometimes, how to look at things in a different way. Furthermore, going through this module really showed me the meaning of typography and how we do not realise the importance of it. I started to observe more posters/billboards/advertisements around me whenever I go out and I cannot help but think of the typeface used or the alignment used. Of course, I know I am not experienced enough to be a critique but I can understand why certain typeface is being used or why it shouldn't be used. There are a lot of things that have to be put into thought when typography is involved. Readability, the message behind the text, the typeface used all matters.

Findings

In the beginning, I was nervous for this module as I was never exposed to typography at all besides looking at fonts in Microsoft softwares or advertisements and posters around me. I never knew the things I learned in this class. I find that this class will really help me in the future as a design student and as a designer in the near future. I did find updating blogs every week was tiring but it definitely helped me to be more organised and to not procrastinate as it would definitely bite me in the back if I did. Besides that, I find that typography is taken for granted because there is not many people who knows what is "good" or "bad" typography because it is not something taught to us everyday. We're so used to looking at things visually and what is pleasing to the eyes and not the meaning behind it. This is why I have found this module helpful in certain ways.
